Wayne Koestenbaum on James Schuyler,
in Commemoration of the Tenth Anniversary of his Death

Thursday, February 8, 7pm
$7, Members Free

The work of James Schuyler (1923-1991) is ever in danger of slipping from notice because of its frankly casual and whimsical nature. Yet his long poems are arguably among the greatest of the second half of the 20th century. Wayne Koestenbaum commemorates the tenth anniversary of Schuyler's death by reminding a New York audience of the indispensability and secret monumentality of the work of this legendary member of the New York School of Poets.

Wayne Koestenbaum is the author of three books of poetry, including Rhapsodies of a Repeat Offenderand The Milk of Inquiry, and four books of critical prose, including The Queen's Throat: Opera, Homosexuality and the Mystery of Desire; Jackie Under My Skin: Interpreting an Icon;and, most recently, Cleavage: Essays on Sex, Stars, and Aesthetics. The recipient of a Whiting Writer's Award, he has also written the libretto for an opera, Jackie O,and is currently at work on a biography of Andy Warhol for the Penguin Lives series. Previously an Associate Professor at Yale University, he is currently Professor of English at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
