The Five Powers of Poetry

A Seminar for teachers with Tony Hoagland

$390; pre-registration is required

Through the three-day Five Powers of Poetry seminar, teachers at the high school and community college levels will acquire the understanding, vocabulary, practical skills, and materials to teach contemporary poetry in a beginning or intermediate classroom. The seminar will focus on what poet Tony Hoagland has called “the five powers of poetry”: image, diction, voice, structure, and implication. Through lecture, discussion, and practice, both experienced and novice poetry teachers will learn to elicit and develop specific poetry-writing and reading skills, their own and those of their students. Participants will study the work of a variety of poets—from Anna Akhmatova to John Keats, Frank O’Hara to August Kleinzahler.
