Programs : Poetry in the Branches Events

The goal of Poetry in The Branches is to serve general readers in new communities, extending to public library sites the reach of poetry programs which have proved successful at Poets House. The program grew out of a year and a half of planning between Poets House and the New York Public Library (NYPL) and has operated effectively in the three original NYPL target sites, where poetry circulation increased threefold. In the fall of 1998 it was expanded into two additional NYPL sites and into four sites in the Brooklyn Public Library.

Poetry in The Branches is an integrated, multi-layered approach to creating a complete poetry environment in community libraries. The initiative includes a range of complementary pieces within one package. But the result is far beyond "redecorating." By increasing poetry acquisitions at each site within a context of librarian training and site-specific poetry events, Poetry in The Branches cultivates many different poetry audiences within a neighborhood. By combining the best of each others' resources, Poets House and the New York and Brooklyn Public Libraries have created a national model for developing poetry services in community libraries.
