In the Spotlight

Richard J. Schwartz

Poets House mourns the loss of our dear friend and champion, Richard Schwartz—businessman, and arts and culture visionary.

When asked how Poets House built a place for poetry, a project that took nearly a decade, I say: public and private partnership; board, staff and donor energy; and Dick Schwartz! As Chairman of The New York State Council of the Arts under the Pataki administration, Dick furthered Poets House's quest to find a permanent, sustainable home by opening his rolodex year after year, suggesting possible developers and projects that we might be part of. Dick was a generous confidante and advisor who helped us make our luck, feeding us suggestions for the future until we found the one that worked.

Recently, in the joy of seeing our space fully animated with people and programs, Dick made a personal donation to what he dubbed "The Poets House Opportunity Fund," leading the way once again. We loved him, we love him. And hundreds of thousands of people who have visited this home for poetry have enjoyed the art of the possible that Dick fostered.
